And We Are All Going To Have To Choose A Side.

There is a man right now, in a Boston hospital, who is on the verge of death. Although D J Ferguson is not particularly old (31), his heart has given out, and without a transplant, he will be gone soon.

He seems like a pretty good guy. And I have to feel sympathy for him. And even more for his family. He and his wife have two young children and one more on the way.

The hospital has refused to do the transplant.

The hospital has an established policy that they will not do major surgery on someone whose chances of survival are minimal, and this includes people who have not been vaccinated against Covid.

The hospital’s decision is not political. Hospital officials have explained, and apparently other doctors have affirmed this position, that major surgery depletes the patient’s immune system to the point where a flu and even a cold and certainly Covid can kill them.

Many hospitals throughout the country have the same policy.

The hospital made the choice in favor of its healthier patients, the ones with the greatest chance of survival. So those who are vaccinated are more likely to be nominated for the transplant than those who are not vaccinated.

The family, of course, is desperate and indignant. To quote D J’s father, “It’s his body, so it’s his choice.”
