I have some understanding of what you're saying because I married into a family of alcoholics. (Of course, every one of them claims to be a responsible drinker.) I had always been a moderate drinker, but I just saw too many fights (some physical but most of them just mean), and so I stopped drinking and I stopped talking to people when they are drunk. I have no judgment on drinking, I just saw that it wasn't doing me or the people around me any good.

As for you, though, I believe that you opened the door to all the critics because you didn't tell the whole truth. Maybe you didn't want to be negative about your ex in front of your daughter, but the result is that you took it out on innocent people and never had the satisfaction of saying what you really wanted to say.

Tell your daughter the truth. That's more valuable than a lesson about alcohol.
